Panco leads McKinsey’s Healthcare Systems & Services Practice in EEMA (Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Africa). He serves clients across the entire healthcare sector, with a focus on advising authorities, payers, and providers in emerging markets on strategic, organizational, and operational topics.
Panco has supported the design and implementation of several health-system reforms, including the development of the overall reform strategies, introducing new health-system financing concepts, efficient capacity planning and resource allocation, holistic approaches to workforce planning, as well as solving governance-related issues. He has also led the design of healthcare systems for greenfield cities and the planning of greenfield provider systems.
With healthcare providers, Panco’s focus is on large-scale transformation programs covering all aspects of operational and financial improvement across both clinical and nonclinical areas. For example, for a public-sector client, he led the design and implementation of a multiyear operational transformation of a hospital provider network through client capability building. Another example includes the financial turnaround of a hospital group with a focus on revenue generation and optimization of third-party spend.
Outside of the Middle East, Panco’s experience includes shaping the growth strategy for a large Swiss private hospital group, numerous commercial due diligences on provider assets, and a multi-stakeholder project with leading governmental and private institutions in Europe to improve care for chronic diseases. Panco has also worked with several large pharmaceutical companies to develop strategies for therapeutic areas and business units.
A medical doctor with a PhD in molecular biology, Panco has published more than 20 scientific publications. Prior to joining McKinsey, he undertook a clinical residency in surgery at the University Hospital of Zurich, with a focus on abdominal surgery and transplantation. He also undertook three years of basic science research with a focus on liver immunology.
