Pat is a leader in our global Oil & Gas Practice. He works with international and national oil companies, oilfield services and equipment companies, and private-equity firms.
Pat’s main areas of focus are strategy and M&A, and he is the co-leader of McKinsey’s service to oil and gas companies in this area. He also advises clients on performance transformation and organizational issues.
Among Pat’s strategy projects, he has helped a global oil company develop a long-term exploration and production strategy, and supported a major oil company in transforming its exploration business through a new strategy, organization, and approach to performance improvement. Other projects have included identifying M&A opportunities, conducting corporate valuations for acquisitions, and helping clients develop market-entry strategies.
In performance improvement, Pat has helped a number of clients achieve substantial bottom-line impact. Recent examples include:
- advising a leading oil company on devising a modularization approach for deepwater project development
- helping a European major increase production by 20 percent at a top-five asset
- supporting a global major in defining and implementing a multi-billion-dollar improvement program.
In oilfield services, Pat has led both our research and client work in many projects involving seismic, drilling, engineering, and construction, offshore logistics, subsea equipment and services, well services, and equipment manufacturing.
Before joining McKinsey, Pat worked as a financial analyst in oil and gas and as a consultant in the global energy practice of Arthur D. Little. He has a doctorate and an undergraduate degree in geology from the University of Oxford.
