Eelco de Jong

PartnerCarolinas

Guides utilities and industrial companies through large-scale performance transformations, enabled by technology and digital innovation.

Eelco welcomes the digital revolution, which is opening up disruptive opportunities for the power industry. As co-leader of McKinsey’s North America digital-utility work, he seeks to position utilities favorably in a world characterized by flat load growth, increasing cost pressures, and rising customer expectations.

Eelco works with electric utilities and other large industrial companies to drive innovation and change at scale. Working in partnership with CIOs, he looks for opportunities to implement principles, such as lean IT, agile, development operations, and the increased use of cloud technology. He also helps business leaders deploy these disruptions to build completely reimagined customer journeys and internal processes.

Eelco’s recent client work includes the following:

  • leading a 12-month effort with one of the largest US utilities to transform their finance and IT-support functions, including the use of shared services, resulting in a 20 percent reduction in cost at constant service levels, while increasing employee satisfaction
  • leading a 5-month study to help a more than $100 billion multinational organization design their shared-services strategy, including design of scope, location, organization, governance, and implementation roadmap and master planning
  • supporting the integration of two shared-service organizations in the merger of two more than 20 billion companies, focusing largely on automation to reduce cost and improve quality

Before joining McKinsey, Eelco worked at Generation Investment Management, a $5 billion asset-management company focused on integrating research on sustainability with classic value investing.

Passionate about music, Eelco has also worked with his native Holland’s Museum Speelklok to organize exhibitions on musical history across Europe and Asia.
